Binder Machinery technicians complete training on Hamm compaction line

More than a dozen Binder Machinery Company technicians completed a three-day training course designed to cover the inner workings of Hamm soil and asphalt compactors, which are part of the Wirtgen Group of products that Binder began carrying earlier this year.

The Wirtgen Group of products also includes Wirtgen milling, cold recycling and stabilizer equipment and Vögele asphalt pavers. Wirtgen’s innovation has produced Hamm’s exclusive “oscillation compaction” technique, in which the roller drum maintains constant ground contact for faster, more effective compaction.

Technicians got a first-hand look at that technology as well as other unique characteristics of Hamm’s compaction line. Binder Machinery Training Manager Ed Snyder said the training, which was conducted by Wirtgen Product Support Engineer Jerry Maly, was extensive.

“Whenever we take on a new line of equipment, we conduct initial and ongoing training to ensure we’re prepared to handle any issues that customers may have,” Snyder noted. “Wirtgen provided us with information on all aspects of their soil and asphalt compactors through both book and handson training. It was one of the most thorough training sessions we’ve ever conducted.”

Ongoing education
Part of the training was done with a simulator and training aids that Wirtgen delivers in a fully stocked over-the-road truck. It also carries compactor components that technicians can use for hands-on experience.

“We believe the more fully trained the technician is, the better he’s going to be in the shop and in the field,” said Maly, who noted that Wirtgen is also setting up a semi that will Wirtgen brings its mobile training unit to a Binder site, allowing technicians to get first-hand experience with the many facets of Hamm compaction equipment. be dedicated to Vögele paver training. “The truck is loaded with drums, eccentrics, engines, hydraulic and other components that can be used so technicians get first-hand experience on what they may be working on later. We believe proper training from the beginning will take care of potential problems down the road.”

Snyder noted that the initial training is only a small step in Binder’s overall commitment to service. “We’ll continue to educate ourselves and our technicians about all of Wirtgen’s products, just as we do with all the manufacturers we carry. Being thoroughly prepared to diagnose and fix issues is part of offering quality service to our customers. The learning never ends.”
